The goal of this podcast is to share our love of the fibre arts and foster community. Our focus will be knitting with flares of other hobbies and interests. We are both recent first time moms and we’ll be sharing some of our adventures in mommyhood. We own Relentless Knitting Company and are contracted by our local yarn store to teach knitting classes. Meet the Knitter - Amy

Name: Amy McKay

Raverly alias: amyelisha

Other Social media? @amyelisha on instagram (my account is private to protect pictures of my daughter, but I do love connecting with other knitters so don’t be shy about sending me a follow request!)

When and how did you first learn to knit? I think it was in 2014, and I learned by watching YouTube videos. Every time I encountered a new stitch or technique I would just watch videos and practice until I figured it out. My own grandmothers had long since stopped knitting by the time I had an interest, but I’m hoping to teach my daughter in a few more years.

What was your first project? A cotton dishcloth. I knit 3 of them on some terrible plastic needles from Michael’s, but despite some dropped stitches and random yarn overs, they are still workhorses stashed away with my cleaning supplies!

What is your biggest knitting disaster? Hmm. Nothing comes to mind really. I tend to stop long before something ends disastrously (in knitting..not necessarily in life!). I knit a Gaptastic Cowl as one of my earliest projects, before I knew what gauge was, and it was monstrously huge. I’m talking, could-have-clothed-a-linebacker big. Needless to say, it got frogged!

What are you most proud of as a knitter? I’m proud to create beautiful, useful, long lasting items that can be tangible examples for my loved ones of how much I care about them (because it’s a big time & energy investment!). And, when I knit for myself, I’m proud to engage in an activity that is a powerful act of self care both in the actual making of the thing, and then in the wearing of it. It really feels like I’m nurturing myself when I cast on something lovely with only myself in mind. We should really call it self-love knitting, rather than selfish knitting!

What are you favorite items to knit? Stuffed toys for the important tiny humans in my life, and shawls for myself

Are you a process knitter or a product knitter? I’m both! I used to be more of a product knitter but the more time goes on the more I’ve found that the act of knitting has become incredibly important to my well being. I’m a stay-at-home parent now, and it is hands down the most difficult job I’ve ever had (and I used to literally save babies for a living as an NICU nurse). Knitting allows me to satisfy so many of own needs: for mental stimulation, quiet alone time, and creative expression, all of which are hard to come by at this stage of my life. So, process has become extremely important to me as well. That said, I can’t fully engage in a project unless the finished object is something I’m excited to gift or wear. What it will be definitely still matters.

Do you have any knitting goals? Projects? Techniques? I’d love to learn brioche, dive into sweater making, and eventually learn enough of the math involved to begin tech editing. Math doesn’t come easily to me, but I love editing. I can learn, right?

Do you do any other fiber arts other than knitting? Not yet, but I have grand plans to learn embroidery, weaving, sewing, and rug punching. I want to learn it all! Especially sewing, I am most excited about eventually being able to make my own clothes and stop relying on fast fashion, which isn’t in line with my values and not the example for resource stewardship that I want to set for my daughter. But because she is so little, and free time is so scarse, new hobbies have to wait a while.

Do you have any other super powers other than knitting? Momming. Thats a super power right?? I never really felt that i had a “true calling” until my child was born. Mothering, while certainly not all unicorns and rainbows, is really a natural aptitude for me. I’m good at it, and I love it (most days). I used to be a pretty good writer too, back in the day, and I can pick up new languages easily. I’m also a PADI Divemaster, which means I can teach some scuba diving courses and guide other divers around sites. I’m an excellent shark spotter! If there is one to be found or spotted in the distance, I promise i’ll see it.

Anything else you’d like to tell the world? (shameless self promotion!) I’m incredibly passionate about feminism (intersectional or bust), and birth and the myriad of ways the two intersect. And I’ll happily chat about either with anyone, anytime!

Meet a knitter

Hi!

I am Circusbear on Ravelry, and lareefinnsson on Instagram.

When I was about 13, I wanted to learn how to knit. My mother is left handed so I couldn’t learn from her. So my aunt taught my dad the basic knit stitch so he could teach me! And someone taught me how to purl along the road, lol. I knitted for a few years, and then forgot about it for 20 years! A friend of mine talked about it a few years ago and I have been HOOKED ever since!

My first big project was a sweater when I was about 20! I still can’t believe I have made a sweater! It had a graph to do the color work & everything! And I did it! So I know I will do it again!

My biggest Knitting disaster? Socks I so proudly knit for my son, making sure they were long enough…but they were far too narrow and he cannot even get them on his feet. So I need to figure out how to adjust socks to fit.

What am I most proud of? That I am continuing both of my grandmothers heritage. They were both great needle work gals, and I have inherited stuff from them both to do with their love of needle work. And I feel honored.

My favorite item to knit at the moment seem to be cowls! Lol. I am on my 3rd in a row!

I am definitely a project knitter. I cannot have too many things on the go at the moment, or it bugs me, lol.

My goals? A sweater! And figure out how to knit socks to feet size!

I love Knitting because it keeps me mindful, and allows me to use the other side of my brain, and put down technology, (for the most part, as I use it for patterns, I do not do paper patterns usually). I can knit ANYWHERE.

I do not do any other needle work. I do not really want to learn to crochet, as I love to knit! And crochet is so fast, that I may never knit again! Lol. I do though, want to learn some felting so I can make some felted gifts for Christmas!

What are my other super powers? A have raised a son, I have a 16 year old daughter, I love horses but also have a fear of riding, so I need to work through that fear. My daughter is very tiny and handles her big horse just fine, so she proves to me all the time that I can do it when I make that step!

I work full time, and also do project work (everything from bookkeeping, to advertising, to communications, to consulting) for other small business. That pays for the horse, & lessons, and my daughter’s math tutor!

I guess that’s a bit of shameless advertising right there!

LaRee

Meet a knitter

Hello ladies - I caught your most recent podcast (“Do Do That”) and thought I would come out of lurking and be a participant. It is not something I am used to be being - but here I am - re-entering the world … I loved hearing about your knitting - I remember your Michael’s days - and your adventures as new moms - I am no longer such a bright and shiny penny - I have some tarnish on me … Here goes …

Name: Janice (Jenise) Reilly

Raverly alias: Jahknees

Other Social media? Not really - I gave up on Facebook years ago when I found that I got tired of all the bragging (not everyone’s life is always that great, you know - or maybe it’s just that mine sucks??) Now I just lurk on my kids to see what they are up to - be careful what you ask - you may not like what you see!! Damn that Instagram it sucks you in and is a whole education in itself.

When and how did you first learn to knit? When I was 8ish in Brownies - Snowy Owl made us finish our swatches when all I really wanted to do was play on the playground with the rest of the younger kids - maybe that’s why I don’t swatch to this very day. I am still friends with Snowy Owl and she makes me dish clothes and slippers for my birthday. <3

What was your first project? I made a chunky cross over vest made with yarn from the Purple Door which was a fantastic 1970s wool shop in Kelowna - full of crochet granny squares and acrylic - it would be very hip today (!)

What is your biggest knitting disaster? Too many to name - mostly involving gauge issues - too small blankets, too large sweaters - wait! there was the most beautiful expensive Jo Sharp sweater I made with Jo Sharpe wool and promptly washed and felted (before I knew that hand knits could not be machine washed) - turned out alright - more fulled than felted and it fixed the gauge issue!

What are you most proud of as a knitter? My perseverance - technically I have frogged more than I have knit!

What are you favorite items to knit? Projects where gauge is not an issue - socks, hats and scarves/shawls/cowls

Are you a process knitter or a product knitter? Product - but mostly I just like to have something to do so I have an excuse to watch ridiculous amounts of Netflix (like seriously ridiculous amounts of Netflix - I cannot emphasize this point enough)

Do you have any knitting goals? Projects? Techniques? Master gauge so I can make things that actually fit and are not a surprise at the end

Why do you keep coming back to knitting? It is my relaxation and my sanity while raising 1 teen and 2 pre-teen girls - the hormones are killing me as they go through puberty and I enter perimenopause - my poor husband is a saint!

Do you do any other fiber arts other than knitting? Some small amounts of needle point, and I can crochet

Do you have any other super powers other than knitting? Being a mother to 3 girls. I am also incredibly logical and honest. Not always to my benefit. I can be a little bit blunt ;o) Also for an oldie, I have a reasonable knowledge of trendy things - I am stealth - I may look like a stogie middle age woman, but I know of what the youngun’s speak - oh yeah - and I thrift good! I am good at finding good things at Value Village.

Anything else you’d like to tell the world? (shameless self promotion!) Nope- self promotion is not some thing I am good at.

Good luck and I actually read your Podcast notes - they are incredibly detailed and well done!

Meet a knitter

Name: Lyndsey

Raverly alias: Lyndseyp

Other Social media? Instagram I can be found as ellekbee or BBknitworks

When and how did you first learn to knit? I first learned to knit when I was 8. My mom is an incredible knitter and I bugged and bugged her until she showed me how to cast on my first project. I made scarves for all my teddy bears. Once I got bored with scarves I wanted to learn how to make sweaters. She kindly told me I needed more practice before a sweater projects. So I gave up knitting until I graduated University and didn’t have a job…I picked up knitting again and have been obsessed ever since.

What was your first project? I learned to read a pattern and cast on a hat for my then boyfriend now husband. It is a bright red acrylic ribbed fishermen style touque. It is very wonky but made with so much love.

What is your biggest knitting disaster? I knit my husband a cardigan for his 30th birthday. I knit it as a surprise, so I was not able to take his measurements. It turned out the body is too short and the sleeves are too long. To make matters worse, the yarn I used for the button band felted so there is no saving this thing…

What are you most proud of as a knitter? My first venture into colour work was the North Shore Sweater by Tin can knits. It is the most gorgeous piece of knitting I have in my possession and always get a ton of compliments on it!

What are you favorite items to knit? Im a huge fan of knitting socks. Most of my friends and family have a pair of socks I have knit for them. Im so proud of my handiwork when they wear a pair of hand knit socks! It brings me so much joy!

Are you a process knitter or a product knitter? Depends on the project. Socks or a projects I really get into Im a process knitter. When I need to hammer out a gift or around Christmas time I’m a product knitter.

Do you have any knitting goals? Projects? Techniques? Eventually, I would like to teach myself to be a continental knitter as well as learning how to brioche. It seems like every lovely pattern has brioche and it is a bit daunting.

Why do you keep coming back to knitting? Knitting is my happy place. Knitting is my creative outlet as well as a way to create community in my neighbourhood and city. I have met so many friends though knitting and I wouldn’t give it up for the world!

Do you do any other fiber arts other than knitting? unfortunately, no. I tried crochet, but it doesn’t make sense to my A-type brain.

Do you have any other super powers other than knitting? I’m a teacher and I teach pre-K. Some days it feels like I have superpowers.

Anything else you’d like to tell the world? (shameless self promotion!) I live in Edmonton and have started a business B&B Knitworks. We are creating patterns and teaching knitting classes. Look for us on Facebook B&B Knitworks and Instagram BBKnitworks.

Ok! Here are THE RULES!

  1. Any and all gift knits will be accepted, there’s no minimum yardage, if it’s a gift it counts.
  2. Gifts knit from yarn acquired in 2016 or before get two entries, so post those FOs twice for more chances to win. (Please be honest, there’s no way for me to actually track this so I’m holding out on good knitting karma that there will be no cheating). If you knit a gift from yarn from 2017, you get one entry.
  3. Entries are quarterly, Jan - Mar, Apr - Jun, Jul - Sept, Oct - Dec. You cannot enter something finished in March in the July quarter etc.
  4. Year long FO thread is where you will open one post and keep a running tally of ALL the gifts knit in the year. Go back and edit this post as many times as you need to include all gifts.
  5. This really should be rule #1 but HAVE FUN! Post pictures of what you’re knitting on instagram with the hashtag #stashtogiftknit2017 so we can see all your projects!

All prizes will be drawn with random number generator except the full year thread winner will be the one with the most gifts knit.
